Magic Staffs

A Magic Staff is a vital piece of equipment for a Magic User in ELEMENT. There are a number of processes to do with a magic staff that should be explored, including:

1: The Making of a Magic Staff.
2: Binding a Magic Staff.
3: Using a Magic Staff.
4: Increasing the Potential of a Magic Staff.
5: Destruction of a Magic Staff.

The Making of a Magic Staff:

One does not have to be a magic user to be able to craft the base materials for a magic staff. Anyone with any Wood Working skill, or working with materials to be used, can craft a staff that has the potential to be a Magic Staff. Various materials have better qualities it has to be said, with wood being probably the best material to use. Though the guidelines should be skills to make the staff, and have the level five skill of Invocation.

It is also worth noting that a staff does not have to conform to the normal definition and be a wooden pole, it could be a sword, or a bow, ultimately the Magic Staff is an item that is generated to be used as a Magic Staff but it should have a shaft of at least 2 - 3 foot.

This is a warning though, that a Magic Staff is not indestructable, and the more harm you place the staff into, the more chance there is of it breaking.

Once the item is created, it is ready to be turned from a mundane item into a magically imbued one. This is done by entering into a Ritual Circle, opened by a Magic User, to turn it from an Invocation Item into a Magic Staff. The crafter then petitions the Lords and Ladies to turn the item into a Magic Staff, investing the item with their essence (this costs Experience equal to five times the level of the Magic Staff), the request made, the Lords and Ladies should then be acknowledged, and granted all the powers associated with a magic staff, equal to its intended level.

A Lord or Lady should also be petitioned in a Ritual Circle for a Magic Staff to be cleansed of its former binding, be it to a living, or dead Magic User, to be used by another. This costs Experience Points equal to five times the level of the Magic Staff.

Binding a Magic Staff:

Binding a Magic Staff is done either at character creation, or by the expenditure of experience points in a Ritual Circle (equal to the level of the staff times by ten). Upon the completion of this more simple process, the staff is then bound to the Magic User, and capable of being used to full effect.

Using a Magic Staff:

A Level One Magic Staff may store up to a maximum of Five Mana Points, that may only be used by the Magic User to whom the Magic Staff is bound to.

A Level Two Magic Staff may store up to a maximum of Ten Mana Points, that may only be used by the Magic User to whom the Magic Staff is bound to.

A Level Three Magic Staff may store up to a maximum of Fifteen Mana Points, and allows for a minus one Mana Point cost for any spells cast by the Magic User to whom the Magic Staff is bound to.

A Level Four Magic Staff may store up to a maximum of Twenty Mana Points, and allows for a minus two Mana Point cost for any spells cast by the Magic User to whom the Magic Staff is bound to.

A Level Five Magic Staff may store up to a maximum of Twenty Five Mana Points, and allows for a minus three Mana Point cost for any spells cast by the Magic User to whom the Magic Staff is bound to.

Unbound Magic Staffs may store Mana Points within them, especially if a Magic Staff is obtained through the death of the Magic User the Magic Staff was bound to. The staff has to be cleansed and then rebound before it may be used again, though it retains whatever level it was, prior to the cleansing.

Increasing the Potential of a Magic Staff:

This is done via the Level Five Elementary Magic Spell of Investment, as listed on page 49 of the ELEMENT Skills Companion.

Destruction of a Magic Staff:

This is bad. A Magic User does not leave their Magic Staff behind, for any reason, without risking the chance that it may be used against them as a foci for the Ritual of Wounding (Page 53 of the ELEMENT Skills Companion).

A Magic Staff acquired by an enemy may also be used as a direct means of targeting the character, as the Magic Staff is a spiritual extension of the Magic User. Spells cast on the Magic Staff effect the Magic User as though they were being hit with the spell directly, regardless of the distance separating the Magic User from the Magic Staff.

A staff breaking, causes an explosion that effects an area, defined by its power level, and the Mana Points stored within it:

A Level One Magic Staff cause One Point of Enchanted Through Damage to all locations, within a 5m Radius*.

A Level Two Magic Staff causes Two Points of Enchanted Through Damage to all locations, within a 10m Radius*.

A Level Three Magic Staff causes Three Points of Enchanted Through Damage to all locations, within a 15m Radius*.

A Level Four Magic Staff causes Four Points of Enchanted Through Damage to all locations, within a 20m Radius*.

A Level Five Magic Staff causes Four Points of Enchanted Permanent Through Damage to all locations, within a 25m Radius*.

  • The Radius is determined by the current Mana Points within the Magic Staff.
