Ritual of Blood and Sand

The Arena:

Gladiators are all about the Arena, whether it is as an enslaved Gladiator of a Professional, or a creature or prisoner thrown to the mercy of the Gladiator fighting to build their reputation. It serves as the focus point for ‘The Ritual of Blood and Sand’, and is the melting pot, the testing ground where the Gladiator must prove their mettle and begin the process of building a winning streak of bouts to serve and honour the Ritual of Blood and Sand. Various Arena levels, or descriptions serve as a meter by which ‘The Bouts to have Won’ are determined to be able to allow advancement in the skill trees of the Gladiator types (excluding the God of the Arena).

- 1: Fight Pit: Little more than an area where the arena is determined by the space allowed by the standing crowd clustered to watch the bout, it still manages to serve the Ritual of Blood and Sand. It only serves to advance a Gladiator to level four of their Gladiatorial Skill Lists, and also incurs a x4 multiplier to the number of bouts to have won to earn that requirement to advance. In short the Gladiator must win x12 bouts to be able to advance from level three of their Gladiatorial Skill List to level four.

- 2: Small Arena: A Small Arena is little bigger than a club, sometimes enjoyed by the elite, or wealthy, a favoured thing upon the Fomori Islands like Sword Point and Treminus frequented by either nobility or for the entertainment of the poor. Think wooden seating and poor safety standards, or a plush and refined area within a noble's estate. Either way it serves as a x3 multiplier to the number of bouts that must be won to advance on the Gladiatorial Skill Lists (Bouts to win become x9 and x12 - see below for further details).

- 3: Medium Arena: Or it could also be labelled 'Modest', they serve more readily the crowds, but serve in the shadows of the bigger arenas. More frequently found within the Wrotan Republic, and there is even said to have been one in Vulgorn, it acts as a x2 multiplier to the number of bouts to be won to advance to levels four and five of the Gladiatorial Skill Lists (so Bouts to Win become x6 and then x8 - see below).

- 4: Large/Professional Arena: That requires the Gladiator win either x3 Bouts to advance to level four of the Gladiatorial Skill List, and then x4 Bouts to be able to purchase level five of the Gladiatorial Skill List. The Fomori city of Nor-Cavallel has three of these placed around the city, with their Grand Arena as the 'centre-court' of their trade. Many of the city states of the Wrotan Republic have Large Arena's, outside of the Republic, it is generally unknown at of the year 914AoF.

- 5: The Grand Arena: That requires the Gladiator win either x3 Bouts to advance to level four of the Gladiatorial Skill List, and then x4 Bouts to be able to purchase level five of the Gladiatorial Skill List. A Grand Arena is the only place where Bouts may be won to purchase or advance in to the famed ‘God of the Arena’ Skill List. Two Grand Arena's currently exist in Urutau, one is in Nor-Cavallel, the other in the heart of the Wrotan Republic, in the city state of Wrotentia.

The Ritual of Blood and Sand:

The ritual is not a thing of true magic, rather it is ceremony, the way in which the Gladiator or even the Professional Gladiator, or the God of the Arena honour the opponent, the crowd and the battle in which they lay their lives on the line. It is also the mark of which is required to advance in the skill lists, the place where they must lay it on the line to be able to spend their experience points to buy their advancement. The Ritual requires a number of bouts to be won to allow advancement - the base rate is x3 bouts won to go from level three to level four, and then a base rate of x4 bouts won to advance to level five. It is calculated pretty much the same way as spending Experience Points on Skill Advancements, subject to arena modifiers as stated above.
